First and foremost is content - Google and others love a site that actually offers good content - that is relevant articles, solutions to problems, polls, reviews etc etc
Backlinks are another good idea - getting links back from related sites lets the search engines know not only that your site is available but it offers the content readers are obviously searching for. But make sure you do it right when it comes to backlinks there are a few no-nos.
Understanding and knowing how to use relevant and useful keywords in your sites titles and content is also important when it comes to getting traffic from google
